The objective of this study was to understand whether postgraduate students recognize themselves and are recognized as intellectual workers and how the dynamics of academic work affect the mental health of these workers. As a theoretical lens, Bourdieu's theory of symbolic capital and Dejours' Psychodynamics of Work are adopted, in a paradigmatic perspective inserted in the qualitative scope of human and social construction. Based on a basic qualitative study, 12 interviews were carried out using a semi-structured script with doctoral students from a PPG in administration at a Brazilian Federal University, applying the thematic content analysis technique. The results reveal common patterns among postgraduate students, pointing to a lack of recognition as intellectual workers. The realization of this identity crosses four key perspectives: 1) personal recognition; 2) legal recognition; 3) social recognition; and 4) institutional recognition. This gap triggers several pathologies, some temporary and others more serious, affecting mental health and academic performance.
