This teaching case explores the challenges of undertaking and managing operations in small businesses, narrating the history of Marconi Oliveira, founder of a hot-dog fast-food restaurant. Marconi, without a background in management, achieved success through instinctive decisions, proving that small businesses can be big businesses. However, technical knowledge is essential to implement strategic changes. The case is recommended for undergraduate and graduate courses in administration, especially as a main reading for subjects such as operations management and marketing. But it can also be used as complementary reading in subjects such as competitive strategy, fundamentals of entrepreneurship, financial accounting and systems dynamics.
