Factors of Intention of University Dropout: What Does Literature Teach Us?

Abstract

Dropout in Higher Education is a global concern, with negative repercussions that generate substantial costs both for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and for students, families and society in general. With the aim of preventing this phenomenon and supporting HEIs in their decision-making, this study carried out a systematic literature review on the factors and variables that influence the intention to drop out based on the most recent literature and the highest impact of published articles in national (Qualis A) and international (Q1 or Q2) scientific journals in the period from 2019 to 2024, the last 5 years, using the Knowledge Development Process-Constructivist as a scientific-constructivist method (ProKnow-C). The bibliographic portfolio was represented by 127 articles and the results revealed a higher incidence of predictors related to psychological factors and institutional, academic and social integration, while a lower incidence was found in studies at the level of pre-entry attributes and financial factors. In practice, this study facilitates HEIs to direct efforts towards the most identified factors and proposes strategies to mitigate them. The limitations and contributions to new studies were highlighted in the final considerations.

Specialist in Public Management from Faculdade Educacional da Lapa - FAEL (2019). Graduated in Accounting Sciences from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul - UFMS (2016). He has two years of experience in agro-industrial contractors in the administrative areas, operational control and strategic planning. He carried out his professional activities as a civil servant in the position of administrative assistant at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Mato Grosso do Sul - IFMS, Campus Ponta Porã. He currently works as an Accountant at IFMS, Campus Naviraí. He has experience in the area of ​​Administration, with an emphasis on Accounting Sciences.
