This article assesses the international scientific production regarding sustainable development in the area of administration, determines the main characteristics of its spread and permeation within the international academic world, and briefly goes back through its history to understand how it has evolved. The study was conducted from the perspective of a bibliometric study, a research model of an exploratory character, whilst applying methods of observation, registration, classification, analysis and interpreting the results, and using the research undertaken between 1991 and 2012 from the Web of Science as a base. The results allowed the major fields of study, subject areas, temporal distribution of publications, countries of origin, Web of Science categories, institutes responsible, key authors and journals to be identified. The TextStat tool was also employed to identify the main topics of study (Hot Topics).
