The aim of this research is to characterize bibliographical research, bibliometric research, the review article and the theoretical essay. For that, a broad content analysis was developed on the concepts present in the textbooks of methodology as well as complementary sources seeking to identify what it is, what purpose it has and what forms the four types of texts are presented. It was verified that the literature points out that, in fact, there are characteristics shared by the different types of texts, but that there are characteristics that make them unique. Bibliographic research is presented in the literature as more flexible and may even be only part of empirical research, and be presented in the form of a thesis or dissertation chapter. Bibliometric research must necessarily contemplate a step of quantitative data analysis. The main feature of the review article is the systematicity with which the bibliographic material is collected and analyzed. Both the bibliographical research when the review article is usually presented according to an empirical research structure. The essay, in turn, distances itself from the three other types of texts because it is independent of empirical evidence, quantitative analyzes, systematicity in its construction, and because it has an amorphous structure. The quality of the essay stems from the originality and the novelty of its proposition.
