Abstract

The Professional Master of Science (PM) is a graduate course that has experienced significant growth in Brazil, thus it is important to understand its nature in comparison to the Academic Master of Science (AM). This is dependent on outlining some considerations regarding the
ideas that form the basis for these kinds of degrees with the objective of understanding their similarities, differences and challenges, specifically in subject areas related to Management. Therefore, and based on the available literature, legislation and data obtained from the internet and through electronic and telephone dialogues with the coordinators of certain courses, it was possible to identify their characteristics, backgrounds and regulations, and subsequently analyze the similarities and differences between the two course types. Some relevant points that arose included: PM student and teacher profiles, the role played by CAPES in the process of monitoring and regulating this type of course and the challenges related to the consolidation of the PM in Brazil.
