The text aims to understand the concepts of management and the manager as held by management undergraduates – beginners and seniors – from two public federal public universities in the Northeast of Brazil. Two types of interviews were undertaken with twelve subjects. Some of the aspects of the results were highlighted. Regarding the choice of their university course, points were raised relating to the profession, convenience it offers, that it is a general, complementary or substitute course, and that it is structured for practical application. As regards management representations, the main aspects included: science, art, mediation, pragmatism, common sense and postponement. The students’ thoughts on the manager were indirect, tending to concepts of the teacher, entrepreneur and public servant. The results demonstrated that interview subjects were unclear about the nature, concepts and role of management and the manager in society and in organizations. This lack of clarity puts them at risk, especially of an ontological nature, because they cannot define what management is or how the profession is exercised, and of an existential nature, because of their inability to discuss themselves as managers in the future.Downloads
