Research in the sustainability field is often interdisciplinary. It is based on complex and systemic problems, which require collective action among various actors to mitigate risks and seize opportunities. The qualitative approach is widely used in sustainability studies through methods such as case study and bibliographic research. However, the use of systemic methodological approaches is scarce. The aim of this article is to describe the protocols and procedures of the Interactive Qualitative Analysis (IQA) method applied in an empirical research. IQA is an appropriate method for complex epistemological assumptions and system construction. The method proposes protocols based on multiple sources of data collection and analysis, and active participation of survey respondents. In addition to contributing to their statements, constituencies are involved in data analysis and validation rounds. The study presents the methodological procedures used in the operationalization of a research that investigated the adoption of shared value strategies in large companies. The systematization of protocols and methodological rigor suggest that the IQA is an appropriate method for studies on sustainability.
