This research aimed to understand how university extension has been treated in research that addresses the relationship between university and society in the pursuit of social inclusion. For this, a bibliometric analysis was carried out and, in continuity, a literature review that sought to verify the state of the art of the theme. It was evident, at the end of the research, that the bibliometric analysis is an effective instrument, which maps the publications and provides informative indexes that help in the literature review. This review aims to highlight gaps and potentialities to be explored in underexplored themes or in which the researcher is starting his studies. Thus, it can be concluded that, in relation to the objective of the research, there are three main gaps, namely: the questions of evaluation and validation of the results of extension projects, the theme of solidarity economy as a promotion of social inclusion and the knowledge management. These gaps are potential research focuses that aim to analyze how the university is able to impact the community through extensionist actions.
