Abstract

When dealing with the courses offered in higher education, the literature has favoured discussions on access to them and student completion rates, disregarding student permanence, or prioritising the material aspects related to it. Based on this, a literature review on the subject indicates a theoretical gap regarding studies on permanence contemplating symbolic and cultural factors. Therefore, the aim of this article is to discuss higher education in Administration, focusing on student permanence. In this sense, the article contributes to the literature on the subject, presenting reflections that comprise such factors. It is understood that studying the permanence of students in higher education is as fundamental as examining their entry into the course and the completion of their training. At the end of the discussions presented, possibilities for research on the subject are indicated, with emphasis on the need to understand the academic path of students, their interface with university management, affirmative action and assistance policies, as well as the actions of students to remain assiduous in the course.
