Abstract

Shadowing is a qualitative research technique that has been rarely used on research in organizations. It consists of accompanying a person during their working day during their activities and daily interactions for an extended period of time, in order to collect information that is then registered in the field diary. Besides the diary, the researcher can use other resources. In this paper, our objective is to report the experience of using the shadowing technique in the field of organizational studies. We report the experience of an author accompanying a theater group aiming to understand the way organizations are created and recreated through constant practice and as results of processes. This way, this study contributes to the knowledge of how organizations happen and not simply about how they are. We present the experience with the technique considering the conceptual basis of shadowing, preparation and field research phases, and practical recommendations for applying the technique. By doing so, we point to the technique’s potential of contributing to organizational research.
