“Conservar” ou “Desconservar”? Os Dilemas da Carpello Alimentos

This teaching case presents the trajectory of Carpello Indústria e Comércio de Alimentos Ltda., a successful canned food producer in Mato Grosso. After nearly two decades of growth and structuring of its activities, in 2019, the company received a million-dollar proposal to sell the brand to a multinational in the sector, which already operated in Brazil. Besides of being a real situation, the case encourages students to develop reflections on two sets of strategic decisions, portrayed as dilemmas, generally common to successful small and medium-sized companies: sell the business or continue its expansion. Therefore, the Resource-Based View is suggested as a theoretical basis. The application of the case is recommended for undergraduate and graduate courses, specifically in disciplines such as Planning, Business Strategy, Entrepreneurship or any others that aim to develop the relationship between resources, capabilities and strategies.
